"Jar of Pickles" - SOLD

Here's another attempt at the DPW Challenge. I figured I'd try something a bit more difficult. More difficult for me anyway! Anyone else out there struggle with getting the tops of round objects (jar lids, mug openings, bowls, etc.) to look right?! Wow.. the digital image of this painting looks so RED.

This looks good Mike. It is a struggle when doing ellipse type openings or shapes, but I think the key is to use your brush handle to "measure" visually and compare the "length" of the opening or lid with the "width" of it, then use that same relationship when transferring the relationship to your canvas. You have to close one eye when doing this. The relationship is always a little different than you imagine it when just looking at it and drawing it without this measuring. This is a tip Carol Marine gave me when doing a cup in her workshop. Hope it makes sense! Hard to type and describe!

Nice broad brushwork. Great job with the glass jar.

You could be the poster child for this Dp challenge. This is the way you seem to paint on an everyday basis. Keeping it fresh, interesting, and not overworked. And... a big welcome to Daily Painter Originals!
Love the colors in this piece.

Really beautiful. Love the simplicity. I can tell you got the challenge right - so many of those you can tell the artists simply don't follow directions.

You did a great job on the challenge! I hope to get to my painting this afternoon. They are a lot of fun!

You asked about the blue I used in my painting. It was a mixture, but as I recall the main color was Cobalt Teal. I added some Ultramarine Blue and some Cad Orange. Hope that helps! :-)

Congratulations on DPO!!!

The colors in the shadow and the oranges coming through the glass as well as the variations in the greens on the pickles are all outstanding - I also love that little dark line under the left side of the jar.

You really captured the look of the pickle slices suspended in the jar.

I have to admit, I was stumped by this and was eager to see responses. It's something I find challenging, too. Denise Rose's advice is excellent and I should have remembered since I took a workshop with Carol Marine, too, and she DID cover this. Glad to have the memory jog! Could it also help if you think about the ellipse sitting within a square that's in perspective?
