Without mutation there can be no evolution. This was an enjoyable attempt to throw myself off balance. When this painting was first finished I didn't like it. I didn't like it because it didn't look like my other paintings. It's been on my bedroom wall for over a week now and my opinion has changed. I'm seeing things I really like, others that I'm still unsure of. There have been moments when I've been tempted to rework it but I've decided to leave it alone.

"El Camino Stop Light"

Obviously this was painted from a photo I took from the driver's seat. It's been an unusually sunny winter here in Northern California and the light and shadows are beautiful. I carry a point and shoot camera in my glove box and I've been reaching for it a lot lately.

I'm following my instinct to paint anything that grabs my attention, even if I'm not sure what it is attracting me to a particular scene. I'm also attempting to paint more spontaneously and use thicker paint while working on larger canvases.
