"Dinghies" - SOLD

6x6" oil on Gessobord

These are lobster dinghies on Monhegan Island. What attracted me to them was the interesting shadows and the strong abstract shapes. I think it was Emile Gruppe who wrote that it was a challenge getting red into a landscape painting. There are lots of blues and greens mostly. In this painting I did my initial sketch in a reddish color and let a little peek through.

Beautifully done, Michael...not a wasted stroke. I'm from Maine and I can feel the warmth of this light.

And those are the things that attract me to your painting! I really need to get up to that area and get some boat reference photos! These are so cool and the colors are just fabulous Mike!

I was admiring the red before I read your post.

I can't remember where I read about "finding the reds" in a landscape painting. But the point was that without some reds to balance the blues and green, a landscape painting looks dull and dead.

You really do well with what looks like minimal brush work. The light on these boats make me feel the heat of the day.

Michael, I like your work too. You've got a great sense of light in your work- and really, what other subject is there?
